Lindelof Was “Asked To Leave Star Wars”

Lucasfilm

Damon Lindelof (“Lost,” “The Leftovers,” “Watchmen”) is riding high on the success of his recently launched Peacock series “Mrs. Davis”.

Lindelof made headlines recently for exiting a “Star Wars” movie in the works over at Disney/Lucasfilm. He’s hardly the first to come and go from the franchise, but from the sounds of it – it may not have been willingly.

In an interview for Esquire he was asked about the story that he was potentially joining the “Star Wars universe. He responded:

“I was in more than talks to join the Star Wars universe. I joined the Star Wars universe and was asked to leave the Star Wars universe.”

The earlier reports indicated Lindelof was developing a project with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directing. Shortly before Star Wars Celebration earlier this month, Lindelof exited the project.

It was then revealed at the convention that Obaid-Chinoy will be directing a film that will see Daisy Ridley return as Rey Skywalker. This leads to the obvious question as to what happened between Lindelof and Lucasfilm and was this merely a ‘creative differences’ issue?

Rumors had Lindelof’s script featuring an elderly Rey training two new Jedi knights – one of whom was to be played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Lindelof previously dubbed his “Star Wars” script a “true labor of love” and says it hasn’t burned him on the franchise whatsoever:

“Will I get back in line outside the club and try to get back in again? Of course. This movie was the Alpha and the Omega, it’s the first movie I saw in a movie theater. I love all the storytelling in that world. And if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again, or again, again try, as Yoda would say.”

Lindelof is focused on “Mrs. Davis” right now which is currently airing on Peacock.
