It looks like the market can’t quite handle too many big films at once after all.
Disney and Pixar’s “Lightyear” is on track for a projected $52-55 million domestic opening weekend – considerably below the $70-80 million estimates that were being thrown about this past week.
The film, made for a costly $200 million budget, pulled in a $20.7 million opening day which includes a respectable $5.2 million from preview screenings. Critics have been a little soft on the film, while an A- CinemaScore from audiences is very good generally but ties with “Cars 2” and “Onward” for the lowest score to date for a Pixar film.
Still, it’s easily the highest debut for an animated movie since the onset of the pandemic even if it’s not even half the $120 million weekend opening of “Toy Story 4”.
More surprising is Universal’s “Jurassic World Dominion” is expected to beat it and retain the top spot at the domestic box-office in its second weekend.
Estimates suggest a 61% drop to $57.1 million over the three-day window, a steeper drop than its two predecessors but already earning enough to be among the top four highest-grossing movies at the domestic box office.
“Top Gun: Maverick” also continues to soar with a slim drop of just 23% for the weekend and a further $40 million gross.
