Levy Talks His “Star Wars” Film Approach

Lucasfilm

As he’s unable to film “Deadpool 3” due to the strikes, filmmaker Shawn Levy is currently out promoting his new Netflix series “All The Light We Cannot See”.

Once those strikes lift, the “Real Steel” and “Free Guy” filmmaker will have a very busy time ahead of him as he’s still got around half of that Marvel movie to shoot and then finish, he has to produce the fifth and final season of Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” and he’s writing a “Star Wars” film he intends to direct.

Sitting down with Variety this week, he touched upon all his projects. Asked what his approach to “Star Wars” will be, he says:

When Kathy Kennedy brought me on board to make a ‘Star Wars’ movie, her central mandate to me was ‘I want a Shawn Levy movie. I want a story and a tone that reflects you and your taste and what you bring to your movies – with a ‘Star Wars’ story.’

So I have felt extremely empowered. We are in early days, unfortunately, because the development process was abruptly paused [due to the WGA strike], but I feel very empowered to trust my instincts in the development of this story and movie.”

He says he’s experiencing that empowerment within a larger franchise right now with “Deadpool 3”:

“My ‘Deadpool’ movie is turning out to be exactly what Ryan [Reynolds] and I had hoped when we started off. So I’m going into the development of my ‘Star Wars’ movie with a similar optimism, and faith that my instincts will be allowed to lead the way.”

With “Stranger Things,” he says everyone involved in the production is eager to get back to work. It’s especially true with the young cast who are aging quickly.

In this particular case, he says: “Our hair and makeup and wardrobe department are pretty exceptional, using costumes and wigs and makeup” to make the actors seem younger than they are.

“All The Light We Cannot See” premieres early next month on Netflix.
