Leitch: “Gears of War” Movie Is ‘Going To Happen’

The Coalition Studio

Just under a year ago, “The Fall Guy” and “Bullet Train” director David Leitch reportedly entered negotiations to helm the big-budget live-action “Gears of War” movie at Netflix.

“Dune” scribe Jon Spaihts was writing the script for the adaptation that will see streaming giant Netflix teaming with the game’s Canadian developer The Coalition Studio.

Since the announcement, however, there’s been little in the way of news. In August last year, Leitch’s wife/producing partner Kelly McCormick indicated the script was still being written.

Speaking with Collider this week while promoting “How to Rob a Bank” at CinemaCon, Leitch indicates the project has plenty of momentum:

“Gears of War, I think, is going to happen. We have a great draft that’s in progress that’s in really great shape. The studio’s more determined than ever to make it. Netflix is 100% behind it. The Coalition is fired up, as well. They have their game releasing this year, as well, and so it’s all lining up that that movie will happen.”

Set on the planet Sera, the game thrusts players into a battle for survival between humans and a race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet known as the Locust Horde. Players assume identities of soldiers on Delta Squad as they fight to save Sera’s inhabitants.

Leitch and wife/producing partner Kelly McCormick will produce the film via their 87North production label.

The next game in the franchise, “Gears of War: E-Day,” is expected to be released sometime in 2026.
