Legendary Planning “Buck Rogers” Reboot

Legendary (“Dune,” “Kong: Skull Island”) is putting the final touches on a deal to pick up the rights to classic 25th century sci-fi character Buck Rogers.

Don Murphy and Susan Montford (“Transformers,” “Real Steel”) will produce the feature which is intended to launch a multi-platform sci-fi franchise. Namely this film will pave the way for a prestige television series as well as an anime series, giving audiences a real explanation of the world in play here.

Originating in he 1920s, the character is a human man who falls into suspended animation in an accident. He awakens five centuries into the future where he’s enlisted to help fight a war between several gangs in what was once America.

The property has existed in literary form of some kind for a century, inspiring many imitators from Flash Gordon to Looney Tunes’ Duck Dodgers, but is best remembered for the short lived NBC live-action series in 1979. That starred Gil Gerard and Erin Gray.

A writer and other talent will now be hired for the project.
