Jonny Lee Miller (“Elementary,” “T2: Trainspotting”) will play former U.K. Prime Minister John Major in the fifth season of “The Crown” on Netflix.
Major served as Conservative Party leader and U.K. Prime Minister from 1990 to 1997, taking over from Margaret Thatcher before being succeeded by Tony Blair.
His time in power coincided with the last few years of Princess Diana’s life and in more recent years the tabloids have exploited his relationship with former MP Edwina Curry following the publication of her memoirs.
He is viewed favourably by the British public as opposed to the more divisive leaders on either side of him, but the casting of Miller in the role has raised some eyebrows due to the obvious physical differences.
Production on the new season kicks off in July with a whole new cast in tow including Imelda Staunton as the Queen, Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, Dominic West as Prince Charles, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip and Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret.
