Filming on the second season of HBO’s acclaimed post-apocalyptic drama series “The Last of Us” could get underway before 2023 is over.
That’s the indication from actor Pedro Pascal who was asked by Collider this week whilst out promoting “The Mandalorian” third season launch if there was a chance the second season could begin filming this year.
He responded in his usual playful tone: “In the year 2023? Oh, what season are we in now? We’re getting into spring?” before adding: “Yes, there is a chance. Yes.”
The first season began filming in July 2021 with the shoot running for almost a full year through to June 2022 and the series then premiered six months later in mid-January this year. Thus should his comments pan out and filming were to begin on a second season just before the year’s out, it’s likely the second season wouldn’t premiere until the second quarter of 2025 – two years after the first season.
“The Last of Us” has already been renewed for a second season and as previously indicated, the showrunners have no intention of stretching the series beyond the second game, nor cover the time period between the five-year-jump between both games – they’re sticking to what’s in the games themselves.
Whilst the nine-episode first season was able to cover the first game, the second game is almost double the length of the first and so it’s likely to be aired across two seasons – of what number of episodes each is not clear.
The second game picks up the story five years on and deals with the consequences of the events in what will be the show’s first season finale airing on March 12th. It’s a much larger scale story mostly unfolding in Seattle as it delivers a very dark tale exploring the true cost of revenge.
Two more episodes of “The Last of Us” are slated to air Sundays on HBO.
