“Last Dance” A Netflix Hit, Apple Gets “Greatness”

ESPN’s ten-part documentary series “The Last Dance,” about Michael Jordan and the 1990s Chicago Bulls team, has been a ratings smash hit not just inside the United States, but outside is well.

Netflix, which hold the global rights to the series, has announced that 23.8 million households overseas have checked out the series in its first four weeks on the service. That number falls under the streamer’s metrics which count how many member accounts watched a given show or movie for a minimum of just two minutes.

“The Last Dance” will launch on Netflix in the U.S. on July 19th following its recently finished ESPN run where it averaged 5.6 million viewers across all ten episodes. Prior to that, ABC will re-air episodes starting this Saturday with two weekly episodes over five weeks.

The talk comes as Apple is muscling in on the sports doco arena and have picked up the short form documentary series “Greatness Code,” a seven-episode first season that spotlights untold stories from the greatest athletes in the world as they examine a pivotal moment that defined their careers.

LeBron James, Tom Brady, Usain Bolt, Kelly Slater, Katie Ledecky and Alex Morgan are all involved in the first season which Gotham Chopra helms and which will debut globally July 10th exclusively on Apple TV+.
