“Avatar: The Last Airbender” series voice actor Michaela Jill Murphy has reportedly revealed that the upcoming movie continuation of the series from the original creators will feature an entirely different voice cast.
Game Luster (via CBR) reports that Murphy attended MomoCon in Atlanta this past weekend where she confirmed that the original’s principal cast – including Mae Whitman, Dante Basco, Zach Tyler Eisen – will not reprise their roles in the film.
Credited as Jessie Flower in the animated Nickelodeon series, stated, Murphy told the outlet: “I think they’re going to be recasting for pretty much everything” and said while she was disappointed, she will still be “cheering from the audience with everyone else”.
She added that any fan efforts to demand the return of the original cast wouldn’t work as the show’s creators, Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino, are firm with their decisions over the property: “Mike and Bryan do what they want, so it’s not like people are going to clamor and be like, ‘Bring back the originals!’ and they’re just going to change their minds”.
Murphy explains that this can be seen with the original show: “That’s what happened with the original. It was three seasons, and then people were like, ‘make a fourth, make a fourth!’ and they were like ‘no’.”
A sequel series was created with “Legend of Korra,” but the pair stood by not doing another season.
The new feature-length film unfolds fifteen years after the events of the third season with the characters of Aang, Katara, Toph, Suki, Sokka and Zuko, who are now in their late 20s/early 30s.
That film is set for release on October 10th 2025 and joins more “Avatar” tales in the works, including another animated series, a standalone Zuko film, and a live-action adaptation due this year.
