Larry Charles: $250M Movies Are ‘Offensive’

Netflix

“Borat,” “Bruno” and “Religulous” director Larry Charles, currently out promoting his new indie film “Dicks: The Musical,” says he’s not involved in big-budget projects any more.

Appearing on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, the helmer took his interview as an opportunity to slam the current Hollywood system and its focus on bloated blockbusters:

“I try to make things like Dangerous Comedy or this movie [Dicks: The Musical] – this movie’s a very low-budget movie.

Politically for me, ethically for me, I find it offensive when movies cost $250 million and the world is in the state that it’s in. So I’m also looking to make a statement in the way these things are made.”

A director-producer for HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Charles witnessed how comedy and media work around the world during the filming of his four-part Netflix docuseries “Dangerous World of Comedy” and says:

“We’re all seduced by great TV shows and great movies and we’re distracted by those things, and we’re then indulging in that same capitalist system and there’s no way it’s going to change as long as we do that. … I struggle with that.”

Charles adds he’s appreciative that he has found a way to make the work that he does, even as the current media landscape is only making things more difficult.

A24 has “Dicks: The Musical” in cinemas now.
