Kurtzman, Cudi Offer A Little “Star Trek” News

The “Star Trek” panel at this year’s New York Comic Con this weekend revealed sadly little about what’s to come for the franchise, even with both producer Alex Kurtzman and “Star Trek: Lower Decks” creator/showrunner Mike McMahan in attendance.

First up, it was confirmed T’Lyn (Gabrielle Ruiz) will return for the fifth season of “Lower Decks” which will also feature a return to the Orion homeworld.

The fifth and final season of “Star Trek: Discovery” has been completed and aims to serve as an “incredibly satisfying” end to the series. However no release date was announced or new trailer was shown, not even any key art.

Kurtzman confirms the writer’s room for the “Starfleet Academy” series has re-opened and will include ‘Lower Decks’ star Tawny Newsome among its scribes. No mention was made of the show’s time period setting though recent rumors suggest it’ll be set in the ‘Discovery’ era of the 32nd century.

Everything else? Nothing – zero updates on the third season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” the possibility of “Star Trek: Legacy,” and nothing on either the “Section 31” film or a fourth Kelvin-verse film.

What was featured? Rapper Kid Cudi showed up to launch a multi-platform collaboration titled “Boldly Be: Star Trek x Kid Cudi”. This includes the Trek-themed song “Heaven’s Galaxy,” a “Fortnite”-“Star Trek” game starring him called “Star Trek: Mirror Madness,” and a line of “Star Trek x Kid Cudi” streetwear.

For now, it seems the franchise has effectively stalled until the actor’s strike is over. After that, a third season of SNW can start filming, Discovery S5 promotion can begin and actual progress can be made in other areas.
