Sony’s latest attempt at building out its own Marvel Universe (affectionately still going by S.P.U.M.C. online) is “Kraven the Hunter,” the currently shooting J.C. Chandor-directed film about the famed Spider-Man villain.
The movie sees Aaron Taylor-Johnson take on the key role of Kraven, joined by an impressive cast including Russell Crowe as his father, Fred Hechinger as his brother, Ariana DeBose as his love interest, Levi Miller as a younger version of himself, and both Christopher Abbott and Alessandro Nivola as the film’s villains.
Speaking with THR about the film recently, Taylor-Johnson says one thing that will differ this film from many of its Marvel counterparts is that the project is entirely shot on location – completely different to his just released “Bullet Train” which was confined to a sound stage:
“Kraven being shot entirely on location is going to make all the difference. It’s going to add something really beautiful to our personal story. It also sets Kraven apart from that Marvel stage look.
It’s important for this character to be in the real world. It’s important for the authenticity of the story. When you’re running on streets barefoot, you take in those elements and play within that.”
Taylor-Johnson previously starred in a Marvel film as Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver, the brother of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) in “Avengers: Age of Ultron”. “Kraven the Hunter” will hit theaters on January 13th 2023.
