It turns out Netflix may be the saviour of what is lining up to be one of the worst box-office weekends of the year.
The streaming giant is bringing a sing-along version of its animated feature “Kpop Demon Hunters” to roughly 1,700 screens for a Saturday and Sunday play at most circuits except for AMC.
Deadline reports that as of now, 1,100 of those are sold out, with the film looking set to pull in at least $15 million despite the limited showings. It will also potentially take the top spot from “Weapons”, which is headed for a third weekend of $13.5 million.
“Kpop Demon Hunters” is currently the second most viewed movie on Netflix of all time with 210.5 million global views, and its continued strong success suggests it’ll push “Red Notice” (230.9m views) off the top spot soon enough as it has been consistently pulling in around 26 million views per week.
As there’s no Friday showing, we won’t really know what kind of numbers it will do until well into Saturday, but pre-sales are reportedly getting exhibitors excited.
New limited releases like Ethan Coen’s “Honey Don’t!” and David Mackenzie’s “Relay” are only expected to do around $3 million and $1 million respectively on almost as many screens as “Kpop Demon Hunters”.
