Back in December came the news that celebrated gaming auteur Hideo Kojima and his Kojima Productions label were teaming with Hammerstone Studios (“Barbarian”) to develop and produce a film adaptation of Kojima’s highly acclaimed game “Death Stranding”.
The fast-tracked project is in development and will be set within the same universe as the game and reportedly introduce new elements and characters rather than focusing on the existing ones. No one is set to write or direct as yet.
Now, the celebrated auteur has offered an update on the project this weekend, reassuring fans he’s heavily involved in all aspects of the film. In a statement on Twitter he says: “I am deeply involved in producing, supervising, plotting, look, design & content of the film adaptation of ‘Death Stranding’, just not in charge of directing.”
With more than ten million copies sold worldwide since its launch first as a PlayStation exclusive in 2019 before hitting PC as well in 2020. The game unfolds in a world after the eponymous cataclysmic event which led to destructive creatures roaming the Earth and society left devastated.
Players take on the role of Sam Bridges (Norman Reedus), a courier delivering supplies to isolated colonies and reconnecting them via a wireless communications network.
Mads Mikkelsen, Lea Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, Troy Baker, Lindsay Wagner, and filmmakers Nicolas Winding Refn and Guillermo del Toro all lent their voices and likenesses to the project which was nominated for a game of the year in 2019.
Alex Lebovici is producing the project. Kojima is also at work on a “Death Stranding” game sequel for PlayStation 5.
