Kirkman On “Invincible” S2 Split, S3 Update

Prime Video

The animated series adaptation of “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman’s acclaimed comic “Invincible” is coming back soon, with Amazon revealing its second season plans at San Diego Comic-Con.

The hour-long, adult animated superhero series revolves around seventeen-year-old Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), who’s just like every other guy his age – except that his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons).

As Mark develops powers of his own, he discovers that his father’s legacy may not be as heroic as it seems.

As previously reported, the first four episodes of the second season will premiere on November 3rd on the streamer, with the next four expected to arrive in early 2024.

Speaking about the decision to split the second season in two, he tells Collider that both production issues and storytelling elements played a part in that decision:

“It’s a little bit of the production process just because ramping things up has taken a lot longer than we thought. But also, this is something that we’ve done with every season of The Walking Dead, and I think narratively, it’s kind of cool to have that pause to digest what you’ve just experienced.

And when you see Episode 4 of Season 2, you may need a break. It’s a big episode. It’s definitely a mid-season finale kind of episode. With everything going on in that time of year with, you know, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, and a lot of family time, I think a lot of shows get lost in the shuffle there.

So I think it’s good to take a pause and narratively, it’s gonna make things hit a little bit harder. People will know what I’m talking about when the season launches.”

Separately, he also confirmed to ComicBook.com that the gap between the overall second season and the third would be much shorter than the more than two years between the first and second seasons:

“Making an animated series is kind of like assembling a factory and getting that factory running, and now that we have everything in place, this is going to be the longest gap there will ever be between seasons. From this point on, every gap between seasons will be smaller.”

The new season picks up right after the end of the first season and welcomes the likes of Tatiana Maslany, Sterling K. Brown, Daveed Diggs, Cliff Curtis, Calista Flockhart, Scoot McNairy, Lea Thompson, Jay Pharoah, Ella Purnell, Tim Robinson, Rhea Seehorn, Paul F. Tompkins, Shantel VanSanten, Peter Cullen, and Ben Schwartz to its cast.
