Matthew Vaughn returns to the “Kingsman” franchise with the upcoming prequel tale “The King’s Man” which tracks the origins of the agency that in the present day yields Harry Hart (Colin Firth) and Eggsy (Taron Egerton).
Set during the early days of the first World War, the likes of Ralph Fiennes, Djimon Hounsou, and Gemma Arterton star in the film which is said to be more espionage based and strike a different tone to its predecessor.
Though on the surface there appears to be little connecting the films beyond the title and some hints, Vaughn tells Empire Online the film will be used to setup some of the events in the planned third and final “Kingsman” film:
“We’ve put seeds for what’s going to happen in Kingsman 3 all the way back into this. And it’s going to be very different.”
Vaughn was initially planning to let another filmmaker tackle the new “Kingsman” but now it sounds like he may do it himself, he says:
“I actually don’t know what I want to do. There is an opportunity for a director to really change it up, but I’m considering it.”
“The King’s Man” is currently targeting a September release.
