Netflix is turning to two of its key talents – “The Kissing Booth” star Joey King and “The Babysitter” director McG, to work on an adaptation of Scott Westerfeld’s bestselling dystopian fantasy novel “Uglies”.
King will star in and executive produce while McG will direct the story which is set in a world in which a compulsory operation at sixteen wipes out physical differences and makes everyone pretty by conforming to an ideal standard of beauty.
King reportedly has long been a fan of the series and brought the series to Netflix, getting them to read the script and the book and then option it. Krista Vernoff will adapt the script while McG, Robyn Mesinger, Dan Spilo, Mary Viola, John Davis and Jordan Davis will produce.
King has already shot a third “Kissing Booth” film, is coming off an Emmy-nominated role in Hulu’s “The Act,” became the youngest person to strike a deal with a streaming network (Hulu), recently signed on to co-star with Brad Pitt in Sony’s “Bullet Train,” and will star in and produce both the film “The In Between” for Paramount and the limited series “A Spark of Light” at Sony.
