Earlier this year came news that Amazon had scrapped its planned TV series adaptation of Stephen King’s fantasy novel series “The Dark Tower,” a work that would’ve effectively ignored the failed 2017 film adaptation.
In an interview with The Kingscast last week, planned showrunner Glen Mazzara (“The Walking Dead”) has now revealed that the series was planning to go as meta as the novels with King appearing as himself as a character in the same way he does in the books. Mazzara says:
“If Stephen was up for it we would’ve done it, or I would’ve cast someone to play Stephen King. But if Stephen King’s gonna be a character in the books, I felt like I had to be a character in the show.”
The series would see former British soap star Sam Strike as a young Roland Deschain and would show how he got his guns, his first conflict with the man in black (Jasper Paakkonen), his first love and his first mission as a gunslinger. Michael Rooker, Jerome Flynn and Joana Ribeiro also were to star.
