Over a decade since we last saw Jack Bauer in “24: Live Another Day” being taken into Russian custody on a Moscow-bound helicopter, it may be the CTU agent extraordinaire’s time in a gulag will soon be over.
In a new interview with Montreal Now (via TV Line), actor Kiefer Sutherland has revealed that not only is he keen to revisit the character, but something has already been penned by showrunner and executive producer Howard Gordon that the actor has clicked with.
Sutherland played the character across eight seasons from 2001-2010 of the main “24” series and then again in that 12-episode limited series event. Of the potential new incarnation he says:
“Howard Gordon has come up with an idea that I like. Before, the material had not been written, so I would have to say, ‘I’m not the one that’s in the way.’ [But] something has been written. I think it’s really good. I think it’s really strong.”
A good script is only a stepping stone though, there’s various other hurdles that have to be cleared first – most notably how the FOX owned series is now under the control of Disney:
“24 was originally with Fox. Now it’s owned by Disney because of what Fox has sold off, and so it has to go through different channels before it’s either approved or disapproved. Like everybody else, it’s something I would really like to do. I would like to close that story. It was left kind of wide open. So, fingers crossed. There’s a chance. We’ve taken some considerable steps forward.”
A 12-episode spin-off series titled “24: Legacy” premiered in 2017 with that one putting the focus on Corey Hawkins as ex-Army Ranger Eric Carter. Sutherland wasn’t involved in that series.
