“Clerks” and “Dogma” filmmaker is teaming with WildBrain (“Peanuts,” “Inspector Gadget”) to develop a new animated series based on the classic 1930s “The Green Hornet” radio series and 1960s TV series.
Smith was hired to write a live-action feature film screenplay based on the character for Miramax in 2004, that version never got out of development. The property was then adapted for the big screen in 2011 with Michel Gondry directing and Seth Rogen starring.
Smith’s script meanwhile was turned into a comic book series published by Dynamite Entertainment in 2010. Now comes this new cartoon which will reportedly target a family audience and update the story for contemporary times.
The show follows the adventures of a re-imagined Green Hornet and Kato, now the grown son of the original Green Hornet and the daughter of the original Kato, as they partner to battle crime in Century City.
The character’s iconic high-tech car Black Beauty will appear in the series with Smith set to take the project out to broadcasters and streamers. Smith most recently directed the comedy horror anthology film “Killroy Was Here” which released a trailer earlier this week.
