Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has provided an update on how two other “Star Wars” projects are going – namely, the films that Taika Waititi and Rian Johnson have been developing.
Both have been attached to “Star Wars” films for some time. Yet both are creators who are in high demand. Both are working on other projects and don’t seem to be in any rush.
Appearing at Star Wars Celebration in London over the weekend, Kennedy says of Waititi’s film that the New Zealand filmmaker is pacing himself. She tells The Wrap: “He is working away. He is just a little slow, but he’s working away. And he’s very busy.”
Later she went into a more detailed answer with Variety, telling that outlet:
“Taika is still working away. He’s writing the script himself. He doesn’t really want to bring others into that process, and I don’t blame him. He has a very, very unique voice. So we want to protect that and that’s what he’s doing. But we’re going to make that one day.”
Lucasfilm first announced Waititi would be directing and co-writing a “Star Wars” film back in 2020, but there’s been little in the way of news since.
She also spoke with the latter outlet about how Rian Johnson’s film is going:
“Rian and I talk all the time. He is unbelievably busy. So we’re not actively involved in anything at the moment because he’s doing another one of the ‘Glass Onion’ movies, and then God knows what else. But he really wants to step back into the space. It’s a big commitment of time, so that’s really on him.”
This all follows on from Friday’s news that “Logan” director James Mangold and “The Mandalorian” co-creator Dave Filoni are directing newly announced films set at opposite ends of the “Star Wars” timeline.
