Netflix has acquired “Rodney & Sheryl,” a new film based on the true story of a serial killer who competed on and won a date on the popular TV game show “The Dating Game”.
Ian MacAllister McDonald penned the Black List script with Anna Kendrick attached to star as contestant Cheryl Bradshaw, while Chloe Okuno will direct the project.
Rodney Alcala was in the midst of a killing spree in 1978 when he took part in the series. At that point he had murdered at least five women and previously been convicted of the attempted murder of a twelve-year-old girl.
Bradshaw was supposed to go on a chaperoned date with Alcala, but she was put off by his odd vibe. Two years later he was arrested after investigators found evidence in a storage locker.
Alcala is still alive in prison in California today and detectives have estimated he may have murdered as many as 130 people. The story of the film revolves around the events of the game show.
Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules are producing.
