Kaufman On “Ending” & Mortgage-Paying Jobs

Five years after “Anomalisa,” Charlie Kaufman returns with his next directorial effort “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” and reveals to The New York Times in a length new profile piece that he “honestly approached it as my last directing job”.

The new film is a thriller in which a young couple (Jesse Plemons and Jessie Buckley) drive through a snowstorm in Oklahoma to meet his in-laws and soon things take a dark turn. Kaufman calls it “odd, small and a little complicated.”

Kaufman has been nominated for four Oscars and won one for screenwriting, but success is an elusive thing for someone famous for not fitting into a formulaic model. He reportedly developed several ideas for television that led nowhere, and had to take screenwriting jobs to pay his mortgage including uncredited work on the “Kung Fu Panda 2” script. He most recently adapted a short story for Ryan Gosling‘s production company.

His biggest unproduced project is “Frank or Francis,” a musical “about an internet troll’s deranged feud with a film director” which was said to include 50 original songs and had the likes of Steve Carell, Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Nicolas Cage, Emma Thompson, Kevin Kline, Elizabeth Banks and Catherine Keener attached at one point. Studios still didn’t bite.
