“Katy Keene” Canceled After One Season

The CW has canceled the “Riverdale” spin-off “Katy Keene” after just one season. Despite the cancellation, the show’s producer Warner Bros. Television intends to explore possibilities to keep it going on another platform.

“Katy Keene” followed the aspiring fashion designer (Lucy Hale) who meets Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) fresh off the bus to chase her musical dreams in New York. Their world is populated with kindred-spirit starving artists, including mysterious socialite Pepper Smith (Julia Chan), and Broadway-bound performer Jorge Lopez (Jonny Beauchamp).

The series was the only CW show not to be renewed in January, when the network handed out second season pick-ups to fellow newcomers “Batwoman” and “Nancy Drew”.

The axing also isn’t a surprise as the series scored both weak reviews and poor ratings. It’s a far cry from the two other shows also based on Archie Comics, The CW’s “Riverdale” and Netflix’s “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” which both remain consistent performers.

All three shows hail from writer and executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa whose new ABC vampire series “The Brides” was passed on by the network last week.
