Six years after “Detroit,” Oscar-winning filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow has finally begun filming her next project.
The news was revealed by cinematographer Arseni Khachaturan who shared a photo of a clapperboard with Bigelow’s name as the director as one of his Instagram stories. The story has since been deleted but was found by World of Reel.
Nothing else is known about the project beyond Bigelow directing and Khachaturan serving as director of photography – it could be a film or series. However, the best guess right now seems to be a potential lengthy commercial/short film.
The clapperboard lists ‘Scene 110’, which suggests something of decent size, whilst it also has ‘Smuggler’ listed as ‘production’. Some have mistaken this for the title when it’s far more likely to be a reference to the commercial production company that represents her for making advertisements.
At the last report a year ago, it was announced that Bigelow would direct an adaptation of “Jurassic Park” and “Mission: Impossible” scribe David Koepp’s book “Aurora” for Netflix, with Koepp himself writing the script. The status of that project is unknown at this time.
Bigelow first arrived with “The Set Up” in 1978 before helming “The Loveless,” the cult vampire film “Near Dark,” the cop thriller “Blue Steel,” and then her breakout hit “Point Break”. That led to films like “Strange Days,” “K-19: The Widowmaker,” “Zero Dark Thirty” and Oscar winner “The Hurt Locker”.
Khachaturan is best known for his work as the cinematographer on films like “Bones and All” and the currently airing HBO series “The Idol”.
