“The Boys” and “Star Trek” star Karl Urban is in final talks to star as fan-favorite character Johnny Cage in the sequel to 2021’s film adaptation of the video game franchise “Mortal Kombat” at New Line.

The 2021 reboot’s director Simon McQuoid is set to return with a script hailing from Jeremy Slater (“Moon Knight,” “The Umbrella Academy”). A post-credits scene in that film teased the inclusion of Johnny Cage in the sequel.

Cage was one of the original characters from the first “Mortal Kombat” arcade game in 1992 and has since become a central character in the series. The character is depicted as a vainglorious Hollywood action movie star with an extensive martial arts background.

The previous film was a new adaptation of the game franchise.
It starred Lewis Tan as new character Cole Young alongside Jessica MacNamee as Sonya Blade, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Max Huang as Kung Lau, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Sisi Stringer as Mileena and most memorably Josh Lawson as the scene-stealing Kano.

Released in April 2021 both in theaters and on HBO Max, it was an early pandemic hit for distributor Warner Brothers and still ranks as one of the top feature titles on HBO Max since the streaming service debuted.

Atomic Monster’s James Wan, Broken Road Production’s Todd Garner, Simon McQuoid and E. Bennett Walsh will produce.
