“Jurassic World: Dominion” Passes $1 Billion

Universal Pictures

It took a while, but Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s “Jurassic World Dominion” crossed the $1 billion global box office mark on Thursday.

That makes it only the third film to do so since the beginning of the pandemic. It marks the seventh Universal title to reach $1 billion worldwide, and the 3rd in the “Jurassic World” franchise.

The Colin Trevorrow-helmed ‘Dominion’ currently sits at a haul of just over $376 million domestic and $624 million overseas, and is the second highest grossing film of the year behind only “Top Gun: Maverick”.

The box-office news comes as one of the film’s stars, Bryce Dallas Howard, has revealed in an interview with Metro that she was asked to lose weight before filming and that her weight has often been a topic of discussion among studio executives. She credits Trevorrow with rejecting such demands:

“What being in this third film allowed, how do I say this, how do I say this, how do I say this…[I’ve] been asked to not use my natural body in cinema. On the third movie, it was actually because there were so many women cast, it was something that Colin felt very strongly about in terms of protecting me… because the conversation came up again, ‘We need to ask Bryce to lose weight.’

[Colin] was like, ‘There are lots of different kinds of women on this planet and there are lots of different kinds of women in our film’. I got to do so many stunts that wouldn’t have been possible if I had been dieting. I’m really thrilled [at] all the action I got to do, and I got to do it with my body, she was at her maximum strength, and I hope it is just yet another indication of what’s possible.”

“Jurassic World: Dominion” is currently available to stream on VOD platforms and Peacock.
