Universal’s “Jurassic World: Dominion” has reportedly been accepted for cinema release in China, though no release date has yet been set according to The Ankler.
Both previous “Jurassic World” films made over $200 million each in the Middle Kingdom, so securing a release there was important. It marks a rare Hollywood movie to score a theatrical release there in recent times as only a few have managed it including “Dune,” “No Time to Die,” “Death on the Nile,” “Uncharted” and “The Batman”.
Most notably Disney and Marvel have had difficulty securing releases for their titles with no MCU films released there since 2019. Today Chinese box office analyst and reporter Oliver Chen confirmed on Twitter that the “Doctor Strange” sequel has been officially banned there – no reason given.
Puck News has also revealed one of the films barred from release, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” didn’t make it with one potential reason being the country’s government censors requesting that Sony Pictures remove the Statue of Liberty from the film. The entire third act of the film is basically set in and around the statue making such a request highly costly and problematic.
“Jurassic World: Dominion” opens in cinemas globally in June.
