65-year-old British genre actor Julian Sands has reportedly gone missing whilst hiking in the Baldy Bowl hiking area approximately 50 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

Sands, known to be an enthusiastic mountaineer who has climbed peaks in the Alps, Andes and several ranges in North America, was reported missing at 7:30 p.m. last Friday, January 13th though the identity of the hiker was only revealed this afternoon.

A representative for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department says ground crews responded and began searching but parties had to be pulled Saturday evening after roughly 24 hours due to avalanche risks and trail conditions.

Authorities have continued with intermittent searches by helicopter and drone. However, a search party hasn’t been deployed in more than four days. Once weather conditions improve, a ground effort will begin again.

In addition, authorities are currently cautioning prospective hikers to stay out of the area where nighttime temperatures have dropped to below freezing in the past week.

Sands broke through in the 1980s with the Oscar-nominated “The Killing Fields,” the Merchant-Ivory drama “A Room With a View” and the supernatural horror tale “Warlock” which became a franchise.

He stayed in film throughout the 1990s with movies like “Arachnophobia,” “Boxing Helena,” “Naked Lunch,” “Leaving Las Vegas,” “Grand Isle” and “The Turn of the Screw”.

In the 2000s, he transitioned mostly to TV with recurring roles in “24,” “Banshee,” “Stargate: SG-1,” “Crossbones,” “Jackie Chan Adventures,” “Gotham,” “Will,” “Lipstick Jungle,” and the Stephen King mini-series “Rose Red”.

He replaced Terrence Stamp as the voice of Jor-El in “Smallville,” voiced Q in radio play adaptations of several James Bond stories, played various roles in the “Star Wars: The Old Republic” video game, and still popped up on film every now and then such as in David Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”.
