A new podcast miniseries has been running on Spotify in recent weeks titled “Josie and the Podcats”. The limited run series takes a look back at the 2001 film adaptation of the Archie Comics title “Josie and the Pussycats”.
Hosted by two familiar names to Dark Horizons readers – our regular reviewer Blake Howard and author/interviewer Maria Lewis – the episodes managed to get filmmakers Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont involved where they revealed that they had recently tried to pitch a sequel/spin-off idea to Netflix.
Rachael Leigh Cook, Alan Cumming, Parker Posey, Rosario Dawson, and Tara Reid starred in the original about a girl band propelled to global superstardom after the boyband DuJour seemingly die in a plane crash (DuJour survived but were assaulted by Metallica fans). Designated a box-office bomb at the time, the film has since gone on to become something of a cult sensation.
This led to talk of a follow-up with Kaplan saying: “we almost did a DuJour movie a couple of years ago”. Elfont adds: “Yes. We pitched it, with Seth [Green] and Breckin [Meyer], to Netflix. But it was before Popstar, and essentially it would have been Popstar.”
They say the project would have been called “Foursome” and it was all about the boy band reuniting after they had a massive falling out. Green, Meyer, Donald Faison and Alexander Martin played the four members of DuJour in the original.
