Emmy-winner Jon Bernthal has joined the growing cast of Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic poem “The Odyssey”.
“The Punisher,” “We Own This City” and “The Walking Dead” actor joins a cast that currently includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron.
As per usual, there are no specifics on the actor’s role. Plenty of speculation has pegged Damon as Odysseus and Holland as Telemachus, but beyond that, it’s merely guesswork.
The $250 million budgeted mythic action epic will be shot using brand-new IMAX film technology. When it opens on July 17th 2026 worldwide, it aims to bring Homer’s 8th-century BCE foundational saga to giant screens for the first time.
The story follows the Greek hero Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his journey home after the Trojan War, along with the many perils he and his crew encountered, ranging from a cyclops to the multi-headed monster Scylla, whirlpool-generating Charybdis, the sorceress Circe, the nymph Calypso and the vengeful god of the sea Poseidon.
Filming will take place in the UK, Morocco, and Italy over the first few months of this year. Pre-production is underway, and further casting additions are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Jon Bernthal will be seen this Spring on Netflix in both the “Daredevil: Born Again” series and “The Accountant 2” film, with the actor likely to do press for those before he gets to work on “The Odyssey”. His commitment to the Nolan project could well limit his availability for the second season of “Daredevil: Born Again,” which shoots in the first half of the year.
