Dwayne Johnson, producing partner Dany Garcia and Universal Pictures are teaming up with plans to reboot “The Scorpion King” franchise.
Jonathan Herman has been hired to pen the script for the film which will see a new actor play the character which was Johnson’s big screen acting debut (he previously appeared as an alien wrestler on an episode of “Star Trek: Voyager”).
Johnson played the role first in 2001’s “The Mummy Returns” as the movie’s primary villain. Then he led the 2002 spin-off feature which followed the origins of the character.
Johnson’s acting schedule is booked through 2022 but it’s likely he will make an appearance in the new film. The new take is said to be a contemporary version set in modern times and a director will be sought shortly.
Johnson says in a statement: “The Scorpion King was my very first role ever on the silver screen and I’m honored and excited to reimagine and deliver this cool mythology to a whole new generation.” Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia will all produce.
