Lionsgate has set a June 7th 2024 release date for its planned “John Wick” spin-off film “Ballerina” starring Ana de Armas.
The “Blonde” actress plays an assassin trained in the traditions of the Ruska Roma who uses her killer skills to get revenge when hitmen kill her family. The Len Wiseman-directed film takes place in between the events of the third and fourth ‘Wick’ films.
Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Norman Reedus, co-star whilst ‘Wick’ regulars Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane and the late Lance Reddick all have cameos.
Shay Hatten wrote the script based on characters created by Derek Kolstad. The announcement comes as “John Wick: Chapter 4” crossed the $250 million worldwide box office mark yesterday.
In addition, Donnie Yen recently spoke about talk that his blind hitman character Caine deserves a spin-off film. Whilst Yen says he would ‘love’ to step back into the role, he tells Variety it’s unclear whether it’ll ever happen, joking that “there’s always ‘talks’ in Hollywood.”
Both Reeves and director Chad Stahelski have given multiple interviews in the past week or so indicating that a fifth “John Wick” film is not out of the realm of possibility, and neither would do it without the other, but both seem to be very happy for now with how the fourth one plays out.
