Early projections are in and Lionsgate’s “John Wick: Chapter 4” is reportedly on track to have the best opening weekend of the entire franchise.
According to Box-Office Pro, the Keanu Reeves-led film is headed for an opening weekend in the $60-70 million range – well above the $14.4 million of the first and $30.4 million of the second, and just above the $56.8 million of the third.
It comes as March is proving to be a surprisingly busy month with the opening of “Creed III” tomorrow and “Scream VI” next week – both of which are also expected to have franchise best openings. The exception is “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” which is tracking to debut softer than its predecessor.
The numbers come in as actor Donnie Yen revealed to GQ that he called out the film’s script for including Asian stereotypes in terms of his character’s name and appearance:
“The name was Shang or Chang. Why does he always have to be called Shang or Chang? Why can’t he have a normal name? Why do you have to be so generic? Then the wardrobe again – oh, mandarin collars. Why is everything so generic? This is a ‘John Wick’ movie. Everybody’s supposed to be cool and fashionable. Why can’t he look cool and fashionable?”
In the new entry, John Wick (Keanu Reeves) uncovers a path to defeating The High Table and must face off against new enemy The Marquis (Bill Skarsgard) who has powerful alliances across the globe that could turn some of Wick’s old friends into foes.
Lance Reddick, Ian McShane, Rina Sawayama, Shamier Anderson, Clancy Brown, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Yen co-star in the film which opens March 24th.
