Publisher Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive are teaming up for “John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando,” a new co-op FPS game inspired by 1980s action and horror films.
Carpenter is of course the iconic director behind “Halloween,” “The Thing,” “The Fog,” “Escape From New York” and many more. He’s also famously a big fan of video games and has routinely talked about his love for the medium in recent years.
Unveiled as part of today’s Summer Game Fest livestream, the project will be coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC sometime next year.
In the near future, an experimental attempt to harness the power of the Earth’s core ends in disaster: the release of the Sludge God. This eldritch abomination begins terraforming the area, turning soil to scum and the living to undead monsters.
The genius behind the experiment has a plan to make things right and has hired The Toxic Commandos. Players take control of one of the commandos, teaming up with your friends and sending the Sludge God and its horde of things-that-should-never-be back to the underworld. Carpenter said in a statement:
“It’s exciting to be collaborating on a new video game with Focus and Saber. Look, I really like shooting zombies. They keep telling me that they’re called ‘the infected.’ Please. They’re ghouls, dude. They blow up real good and there are a ton of them. People are going to love this game.”
Set to Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name,” a short trailer was played during the fest and can be seen below, An exact release date was not released beyond sometime next year.
