Johansson Circling Live-Action “Tangled”

Disney

After the project was put on hold back in April following the failure of “Snow White,” Disney Pictures has reportedly resumed development on their live-action take on the 2010 animated feature “Tangled”.

Deadline reports that “Jurassic World: Rebirth” star Scarlett Johansson is circling the role of Mother Gothel in the film which hails from “The Greatest Showman” director Michael Gracey.

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is penning the script for the film but nothing has been formally greenlit as yet.

The resumption is not unexpected – while “Snow White” may have bombed, the live-action “Lilo & Stitch” has been this year’s biggest film.

Additionally, the remakes of films since the Disney animation renaissance that began with 1989’s “The Little Mermaid” have had greater success at the box office than the now nearly century-old Disney titles and so are seen as safer bets.

The original “Tangled,” a spin on the Rapunzel fairytale, grossed close to $600 million worldwide.

The news also follows on from Disney’s announcement earlier this week in its plans to adapt Katherine Rundell’s best-selling fantasy book series “Impossible Creatures” suggesting the Mouse House is looking into new IP again.
