Joe Keery Talks Ending “Stranger Things”

Netflix’s “Stranger Things” has resulted in multiple breakout stars going on to pop up in multiple films and shows from Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard, to David Harbour and Maya Hawke.

One of its biggest breakouts is Joe Keery. The 31-year-old actor’s role of Steve Harrington has arguably gone through the biggest change over the course of the series – turning from initial foil into one of the warmest pseudo-dad figures.

The role has led him to other films like “Free Guy” and “Spree,” and, more recently, other TV work like playing Jon Hamm’s son in the upcoming new season of “Fargo” on FX.

Before he says goodbye to it though, he has one final season to shoot once the strikes end. Talking with WWD about finishing the series, the actor says it’s the right time for its conclusion even as he has ‘convoluted’ feelings about it:

“It does feel like it’s time. It won’t be easy for it to end. I mean, I owe my whole career to being on that show and all the opportunities that I had since are because of that show.

So it’s very convoluted. There’s a sense of relief, there’s a sense of sadness. I guess my goal is to just really soak it up as much as I can while we’re doing it, and not take any of it for granted because it’s been an amazing ride with such great people.

And then once it’s done, move forward and try to just hold on to the joy that we had when we were making it….Everything has a beginning and the middle and an end. It’ll be nice to have the end of this too.”

The final season was expected to be shooting about now, but the writer’s strike has put a hold on that. Instead, it’s expected the series won’t be shot until sometime early next year and so may not release on the streamer until 2025.
