Mel Gibson’s “The Resurrection of the Christ,” the very long in the works sequel to 2004’s “The Passion of the Christ,” has lost its original stars.
Page Six reports that both Jim Caviezel and Monica Bellucci won’t be back as Jesus and Mary Magdalene respectively, the production instead will go for an entirely new cast.
A source tells the outlet: “They’re [currently] meeting with actors [in Rome]” with another saying they’d switched it up because: “They’d [have had] to do a lot of work with the [original] actors…digital stuff, plus the scheduling… There was a lot of back and forth.”
Pre-production on the film has already been underway for several months and things need to get moving.
Back in August came the news the much-delayed movie will be split into two parts with both set to release in 2027. The first one (‘Part One’) hits cinemas on Good Friday, March 26th 2027.
The second one (‘Part Two’) then arrives nearly six weeks later on Ascension Day on May 6th 2027. Gibson is producing through his Icon Productions.
The original “Passion” made $610 million globally on a $30 million budget.
