A recent interview between actresses Viola Davis and Jennifer Lawrence has been generating discussion for some remarks by the latter that have caused confusion.
Lawrence played the lead role of Katniss Everdeen in “The Hunger Games” films from Lionsgate, her first outing in the role is in the 2012 original.
In the interview, Lawrence says before “Hunger Games” came out that “nobody had ever put a woman in the lead of an action movie because it wouldn’t work”.
The comment has baffled as it is just plain wrong due to so many famed actresses known for action before her, from Sigourney Weaver in the “Alien” films to Linda Hamilton in “The Terminator” films, Uma Thurman in “Kill Bill,” Angelina Jolie in “Tomb Raider,” Gal Gadot in “Wonder Woman,” Charlize Theron in “Aeon Flux” and “Atomic Blonde,” both “Charlie’s Angels” films, a good swath of Pam Grier’s filmography and so many more.
Despite the faux pas, she continues on with better points in regard to the issues that still go on with casting action films at studios:
“We were told girls and boys can both identify with a male lead, but boys cannot identify with a female lead. It just makes me so happy every single time I see a movie come out that just blows through every one of those beliefs and proves that it is just a lie to keep certain people out of the movies. To keep certain people in the same positions that they’ve always been in.”
Lawrence herself has starred in multiple action films over the years, along with having four Academy Award nominations and being one of the more in-demand actresses still out there. Check out the video of her comments below:
