Just as his new civil rights drama “Loving” premieres at Toronto this weekend, filmmaker Jeff Nichols (“Take Shelter,” “Midnight Special”) has lined up his next project which deals with a different kind of racism.
Nichols is reportedly making a deal at 20th Century Fox that will see him write and direct a new version of the 1988 science fiction thriller “Alien Nation”.
James Caan starred in the original as a racist cop who is forced to team with a new partner (Mandy Patinkin), a member of an alien race who was one on a ship carrying 300,000 alien refugees which crashed here years before with the newcomers assimilating into Los Angeles life. The film was successful enough to spawn a TV series.
Nichols will write the new version and direct, with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Sara Greene set to produce. No word on when it will begin production.
