Jason Clarke (“A House of Dynamite,” “The Last Frontier”) is the latest to reportedly star in the upcoming live-action “Gundam” movie at Legendary Pictures and Bandai Namco Filmworks.
He will join Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo in the project which “Sweet Tooth” showrunner Jim Mickle is directing and writing. Netflix is being eyed as the film’s potential distributor.
It’s presently unknown if the new film will tell an original story or be an adaptation of one of the prior series in the franchise. Specifics of Clarke’s character are also under wraps.
Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the original series began in 1979 and is set in the Universal Century, an era in which people have emigrated to space colonies because of a growing population on Earth.
Those living in the colonies seek their autonomy and launch a war of independence with battles fought by piloting robots known as mobile suits.
The franchise is considered one of the most important and famous in all anime and spans 83 animated series and movies. Even today, decades after its creation, the toys generate over $600 million annually.
