Update: Deadline reports that early talks are underway with Mangold to direct the film likely after he does his Bob Dylan biopic. Mangold has reportedly been chasing the property for a while, but there is no script at present so it’s a while off – but the filmmaker has an offer.
Original: Yesterday came the big unveiling of the DC Studios slate, an event teasing ten projects that will serve as part of the DCU’s first chapter dubbed ‘Gods and Monsters’.
The vast majority of the projects announced don’t have any filmmakers attached to them at present, though it’s widely assumed some sort of early talks are taking place or, at the very least, some ‘feelers’ are out trying to find suitable talent.
Considering this universe isn’t really kicking off until 2025 with the Gunn-penned “Superman: Legacy,” there’s plenty of time to lock down directors. One though appears to have already put his hand up in regards to one of the titles mentioned.
“Logan,” “Ford vs. Ferrari” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” filmmaker James Mangold has taken to Twitter to share a comic book panel from “Swamp Thing,” and in doing so seems to be suggesting he wants to tackle the DCU’s upcoming new horror film take on the famed comic.
Mangold was previously linked to the DCU where it was suggested at the time he could take the helm of “Superman: Legacy,” but this would indicate he’s not interested in that particular project. So far, the reaction to the posting has been very positive.
The Swamp Thing character previously appeared in a short-lived but acclaimed TV series on DC Universe that was originally planned to be ongoing but was then scrapped due to budget constraints.
