DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has revealed that he has spoken with fellow filmmaker Zack Snyder about the new DC Universe. Snyder was essentially the big screen architect of DC films over the past decade starting with his “Man of Steel” in 2013.
The SnyderVerse, or DCEU, incorporated multiple films including Snyder’s own movies like “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Justice League,” along with others like James Wan’s “Aquaman,” David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad” and Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman”.
Snyder’s tenure at DC started to crumble shortly after the release of ‘Dawn of Justice’ as Warners became concerned over reaction to that film. It effectively ended after he left the “Justice League” movie during post-production because of a family tragedy.
Joss Whedon was hired to overhaul the project resulting in a film that was deemed a critical and commercial dud. Snyder got to come back and recut/redo his film into a multi-hour epic for HBO Max that vastly improved on Whedon’s version. Nonetheless, it was a final stamp in his DC involvement.
Gunn, along with Peter Safran, is now running DC Studios which is rebooting the DC Universe with a new slate of films and television series. Snyder meanwhile is comfy over Netflix where he’s been working on his two-part sci-fi epic “Rebel Moon”.
Some Snyder fans have been using social media to urge Warner Bros. to sell the SnyderVerse to Netflix so that the director can continue on with his comic book universe there. Gunn has now responded to that campaign on Twitter and said:
“I have to say, this has got to be the wackiest hashtag ever since 1) Netflix hasn’t expressed any such interest (although we’ve discussed other stuff) & 2) Zack hasn’t expressed any interest & seems to be happy doing what he’s doing (and, yes, we too have talked). He contacted me to express his support about my choices. He’s a great guy. Again, he seems really happy with the massive world building he’s doing now.”
Gunn and Safran’s new DC Universe begins with “Superman: Legacy” in 2025, before that comes some leftover DC films like “The Flash” and the “Aquaman” sequel. Gunn
