James Gray Sets Depression-Era Ghost Film

20th Century Studios

Filmmaker James Gray will reunite with speciality distributor Focus Features for the Depression-era ghost story “Ezekiel Moss”.

The story follows a young, imaginative boy living in a small town who befriends a mysterious drifter who may or may not be able to communicate with the dead.

The late great Philip Seymour Hoffman was planning to direct the project before his tragic death in 2014, so it has been in the works for some time.

Keith Bunin, who is writing the upcoming live-action take on Disney’s “The Aristocats,” penned the script and recently delivered a draft that the studio got excited about.

That led to “The Lost City of Z” and “Ad Astra” director Gray committing to it. Gray and Bunin will now team up to develop the whole story and layout pre-production plans. Likely Story is producing.

Gray and Focus previously teamed on the helmer’s most recent movie, “Armageddon Time”. In October last year, Gray was reported to be directing a biopic about John F. Kennedy that focuses on Kennedy’s time serving in the Navy during World War II. Gray will reportedly pen a new draft of Samuel Franco and Evan Kilgore’s script on what is expected to be his next project.
