It’s “Insidious 5” vs. Indy 5 At The Box-Office

Blumhouse Productions, Universal Pictures

The fifth and seemingly final chapter in the “Insidious” supernatural franchise, “Insidious: The Red Door,” is set to challenge another fifth and final entry for the top spot at the box-office.

The spooky sequel pulled in the franchise’s best preview numbers to date last night with $5 million and is on track for a further $8.25 million on Friday, with the movie projected to earn $26 million over the weekend – despite the various negative reviews.

That puts it head to head with “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” in its second weekend, with that film taking $8 million on Friday and headed for a $24-26 million second weekend – a not-too-bad fall of around 59% from its soft debut.

At present, it’s too close to call with “Insidious” seen as front-loaded and Indy potentially going stronger on the weekend. Boasting just a $16M production budget, “Insidious” will certainly be the more profitable of the two.

The Jim Caviezel-led “Sound of Freedom” is headed for a $15 million haul over the weekend, with that title being front-loaded when it debuted on Tuesday. It came in third behind the other two on Friday.

Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s new comedy entry “Joy Ride,” despite great reviews, is headed for a soft $5.6 million debut and likely sixth place ranking. “Elemental” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” are projected to round out the top five this weekend with $8.4 million and $7.5 million each.
