HBO Max has given the green light to “Welcome to Derry,” HBO Max’s TV series which serves as a prequel to the two-film adaptation of Stephen King’s “IT”.
The series will reportedly unfold in Derry in the early 1960s and will be trying to bring together the community in a rough time. The series will also reportedly go more into the origins of Pennywise the Clown, which was somewhat explored in “IT: Chapter Two”.
King says in a statement: “I’m excited that the story of Derry, Maine’s most haunted city, is continuing, and I’m glad Andy Muschietti is going to be overseeing the frightening festivities, along with a brain trust including his talented sister, Barbara. Red balloons all around!”
The first of the “IT” films takes place around late 1988/1989. Thus with Pennywise on a twenty-seven-year cycle between reappearances (with the occasional attack of anyone wandering into its domain in between), this is likely set during the cycle before the young characters of “IT: Part One” met him.
Andy Muschietti, who directed both films, will serve as executive producer for the series alongside Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs. All three developed the story for the show, with Fuchs writing the script and Andy Muschietti will direct multiple episodes of the series, including the first episode.
Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane will serve as co-showrunners on the project which is being produced for HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television.
