Jeremy Irvine (“Treadstone”) and Hannah Emily Anderson (“Jigsaw”) will lead the cast of the new film “Return To Silent Hill” based on the celebrated Konami video game franchise.
Filmmaker Christophe Gans, who directed the original 2006 film adaptation of the property, returns to the director’s chair for the new entry which is due to begin shooting in Germany and Eastern Europe next month.
Gans, Sandra Vo-Anh and William Josef Schneider are penning the film which will be based on the storyline of the “Silent Hill 2” game – widely considered the pinnacle of the series critically and commercially. A full fledged-remake of that game is in the works.
Irvine stars as James, a man broken after being separated from his one true love (Anderson). When a mysterious letter calls him back to Silent Hill in search of her, he finds a once-recognizable town transformed by an unknown evil.
As James descends deeper into the darkness, he encounters terrifying figures both familiar and new and begins to question his own sanity as he struggles to make sense of reality and hold on long enough to save his lost love.
The previous 2006 film adaptation by Gans starred the likes of Radha Mitchell, Laurie Holden and Sean Bean. Well received critically, it went on to gross $100 million worldwide off a $50 million budget.
Gans didn’t return for the cheaper sequel, the Adelaide Clemens and Kit Harington-led “Silent Hill: Revelation,” which came out in 2012 to poor reviews and box-office. The franchise has been on ice ever since.
Gans says in a statement: “Return to Silent Hill is a mythological love story about someone so deeply in love, they’re willing to go to hell to save someone. I’m delighted to have the wonderful talents of both Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson take us on this journey into a psychological horror world that I hope will both satisfy and surprise fans of Silent Hill.”
Victor Hadida, Molly Hassell and David Wulf are producing.
