Video game developer NetherRealm Studios has been lauded in recent years for their work on the “Mortal Kombat” and “Injustice” fighting game franchises.
“Injustice,” which has yielded two games thus far, sees the various superheroes and supervillains of the DC-verse battle it out with each other, with players able to take on roles like Superman, Batman, The Joker and more.
Both their franchises also bring in characters from other franchises, including other superheroes. The upcoming “Mortal Kombat 1” has expansion packs that include Omni-Man from “Invincible” and Homelander from “The Boys”.
Last year NetherRealm’s creative director Ed Boon did a poll with multiple options asking fans what game they’d like to see from NetherRealm next. Topping that list? A Marvel vs. DC game.
Speaking with ComicBook.com recently, Boon is holding out hope such a project will happen eventually even as he’s aware of all the rights complications likely preventing it:
“I mean, we did a number of games with DC characters. When you’re kids and you’re like, ‘Who would win in a fight, Mighty Mouse or Superman?’ Just these dumb different universe things. There’s part of us that still [has those] immature conversations. To me, Spider-Man and Batman would be the coolest thing in the world. So, of course, we’d love to do that. But it’s probably very difficult to jump that hurdle.”
In recent years, the possibility has become greater as Marvel Games have been working with a variety of video game studios such as Sony-owned Insomniac Games for the celebrated “Marvel’s Spider-Man” games or Square Enix and Eidos Montreal with the well-received “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy”.
Still, getting both Marvel and DC to work together on such a possibility seems remote. NetherRealm, meanwhile, is keeping busy with the launch of “Mortal Kombat 1” next month.
