“Indiana Jones” Scribes On Action Filming

Lucasfilm

Lucasfilm has released the first official clip from the highly anticipated Steven Spielberg-produced and James Mangold-directed “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” ahead of the film’s release next month.

The chase sequence sees Harrison Ford’s Indy and Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Helena in pursuit of Mads Mikkelsen’s Nazi villain Jürgen Voller through the streets of Tangier, Morocco.

The clip was also shown off at Star Wars Celebration Europe last month, and recently, the film’s co-writers Jez and John-Henry Butterworth spoke with Empire (via Collider) about the sequence and how the film’s action is all about letting the characters come through rather than be lost amidst the craziness.

Jez says constructing an action sequence can be a really challenging aspect of any film shoot: “Its got to feel like you’re not just rehashing something. Its got to feel as fresh as can be.” John-Henry then further elaborates and says the film went old school when it came to shooting action:

“They’re character. They’re all character. They’re not just chopsocky. It was an extremely old-school endeavour. Dollies and track and sliders and anamorphic lenses. Old-school lighting and beautiful sets and travelling around the world and physical stunts. And one shot at a time. “It’s lovely making a movie where you’re never going to have that meeting where they’re like, This has got too expensive. That doesn’t happen on an Indy movie.”

He adds that part of the joy in the film’s creation is coming up with things for Harrison Ford’s Dr. Jones to do: “We’d think, ‘What awful situation do we want to put him in and watch him get out of?’ He does it better than absolutely anyone, I think, in the history of cinema.”

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” opens in cinemas everywhere on June 30th.
