Netflix

“Birdman” and “Babel” director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu returns to cinemas next year with a film going by the working title “Judy” and starring Tom Cruise.

Speaking with Indiewire, he confirms plans are for a release next Fall with the film aiming to be finished by February, March. He adds “we still have a long way to go in post-production.”

The project marks his first English-language feature since 2015’s “The Revenant” and was reportedly shot on 35mm VistaVision with Emmanuel Lubezki lensing.

Inarritu also couldn’t gush hard enough about working with Cruise in one of his rare non-tentpole films:

[He’s] the most amazing, unexpected, sweet, gentle relation that I have had on a set. His manners, his understanding, his passion, and his integrity, and the way he prepares. He loves the process. Filmmaking has been his life for 40 years. I have never seen somebody so devoted. I was happy to share with him that passion. And at the same time, we built an incredible relation of mutual trust. He will surprise the world.”

Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, and Jesse Plemons co-star in the film which describes as a “wild comedy” that was “challenging” but also a “wild time” to film.

Cruise plays a powerful man trying to convince the world he’s its savior – before widespread destruction caused by the catastrophic consequences of his own actions. Inarritu co-wrote the screenplay with Nicolás Giacobone and Alexander Dinelaris.
